Early departure from your hotel. On the way west towards the cloud forest, your guide explains the day’s plan, main target species and some background on Ángel Paz and his family.

We arrive at the refuge before or around first light and walk (usually 10–20 minutes, depending on trail and conditions) down to the Andean Cock-of-the-rock lek.

The heart of the day is the antpitta and wood-quail circuit, led by members of the Paz family. Exact order and species can vary, but typically includes several of the following:

• Giant Antpitta (Grallaria gigantea).
• Yellow-breasted Antpitta (Grallaria flavotincta).
• Moustached Antpitta (Grallaria alleni).
• Ochre-breasted Antpitta (Grallaricula flavirostris).
• Dark-backed Wood-Quail.

Each species has its own feeding area in the forest. You walk short distances between spots, then wait quietly with your guide and the landowner while they softly call the birds. When an antpitta or wood-quail appears, the goal is calm, respectful observation: no sudden movements, low voices and limited numbers of people per spot.

Back at the house, we enjoy a hearty local breakfast or early lunch (depending on the timing and your program). From the dining area you typically have a view of fruit feeders attracting Toucan Barbet, Crimson-rumped Toucanet, Sickle-winged Guan and a variety of colorful tanagers and euphonias. This moment is perfect to rest, watch birds from shelter and take great photos at close range.

We say goodbye to the Paz family, take a last look at the feeders and start driving back towards Quito.

Return to your hotel in Quito. During the drive, your guide reviews the day’s checklist, highlights the most special sightings and can comment on the conservation impact of places like Paz de las Aves in the Chocó-Andean hotspot.
